The Year 9 Mathematics course at Howick College is centered on Level 4 of the New Zealand Curriculum. Our primary goal is to develop students' skills and understanding, enabling them to engage with mathematics in everyday life and prepare for the mathematical requirements of future studies and vocations. We work collaboratively to ensure each student achieves their full potential as a mathematician. Numeracy skills are integrated throughout the course to prepare students for the NCEA co-requisite.

Additionally, we encourage students to participate in mathematical competitions such as MATHEX, Junior Otago Mathematics Competition and others. These competitions offer numerous benefits beyond academic achievement, including the development of critical skills, personal growth, and a lifelong appreciation for mathematics.

We are committed to providing a supportive and enriching environment where all students can thrive and develop a strong foundation in mathematics.

**Term 1**

We begin the year with Number in Term 1, as it underlies all other learning in Mathematics and Statistics. Our students will then use their Number skills in a unit focusing on Measurement and calculations.

**Term 2**

In Term 2 we will extend students’ mathematical skills to Algebra, followed by Number Patterns and Graphs.

**Term 3**

In Term 3 we will shift our focus to Geometry - shapes, space, transformations and reasoning.

**Term 4**

We will conclude the year, Term 4, with a focus on Statistics and Probability.

Assessments are due during the term as follows:

Term 1 - 3rd Feb - 11th April, 2025

Term 2 - 28th April - 27th June, 2025

Term 3 - 14th July - 19th September, 2025

Term 4 - 6th October - 9th December, 2025

Year 10 Mathematics and Statistics (10MAT)

1) Year 9 Nulake Mathematics workbook ($25).

2) Level 4 Nulake Mathematics Homework book ($17).

B) Students can subscribe for Education Perfect ($26) - a digital learning platform and get access to range of lessons, practice tasks, practice

assessments as well as past external papers.

Students MUST have their own Scientific/Graphics calculator (recommended by NZQA), 1E5 Quad books, ruler, eraser and a protractor along with a pen/pencil when they arrive for the Maths class. They also need a working, charged laptop for educational tools such as Google Classroom.

To support your child's learning journey, here are some generic questions you could ask them each week:

1) What topics did you cover in Mathematics this week?

2) Are there any upcoming assessments or projects you need assistance with?

Owing to teachers responding to individual students' needs, courses and NCEA standards taught in a subject maybe different to those displayed.
