9MAT

Year 9 Mathematics and Statistics (9MAT)

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr N. Bent.

The Year 9 Mathematics course is centred on level 4 of the New Zealand Curriculum. The aim of this course is to develop skills and understanding which will enable students to engage with Mathematics in everyday life, and to prepare students for the mathematical requirements of future studies and/or vocations. We work collaboratively to ensure that each student can achieve their full potential as a mathematician. Numeracy skills are integrated throughout the course to prepare students for the NCEA co-requisite.

Participating in mathematical competitions offers a range of benefits that extend beyond academic achievement, including the development of critical skills, personal growth, and the cultivation of a lifelong appreciation for mathematics. For this reason, we encourage students to participate in Mathematical competitions such as MATHEX, JUNIOR OTAGO MATHEMATICS etc.

Course Overview

Term 1
We begin the year with Number in Term 1, as it underlies all other learning in Mathematics and Statistics. Our students will then use their Number skills in a unit focusing on Measurement and calculations.

Term 2
In Term 2 we will extend students’ mathematical skills to Algebra, followed by Number Patterns and Graphs.

Term 3
In Term 3 we will shift our focus to Geometry - shapes, space, transformations and reasoning.

Term 4
We will conclude the year, Term 4, with a focus on Statistics and Probability.

Pre-requisites

No entry requirement

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

There is a $40 course fee that covers the subscription to Education Perfect, which is our e-learning platform, NZGrapher, 10 Ticks worksheets and Nulake Homework book.
All students require to carry a 1E5 Exercise Book, Scientific Calculator (e.g. Fx 82 AU Plus II), ruler and a protractor along with a pen/pencil when they arrive for the Maths class. They also need a working, charged laptop for educational tools such as Google Classroom and Education Perfect.
Your child will carry a Homework Book home - their teacher will give them a list of questions to complete each week. They can verify their answers after completing it using the answers at the end of the book. All students are expected to complete their assigned homework regularly, failing to do so parents will be notified.
To support your child's learning journey, here are some generic questions you could ask them each week:
What topics did you cover in Mathematics this week?
Are there any upcoming assessments or projects you need assistance with?
