Pre-requisitesStudents are placed in the appropriate Mathematics class based on the results of their topic tests, PAT results and e-asTTle results from year 9.
Mathematics and Statistics at Level 5 of the curriculum encourages students to develop a logical way of approaching problems based on contextual situations. The aim of the course is to introduce and develop basic mathematical skills, concepts, and understandings in the Mathematical Processes, Number, Measurement, Geometry, Algebra and Statistics curriculum strands. This course will prepare students to apply mathematical skills, concepts, and understandings to familiar and unfamiliar problems arising in real and simulated situations; demonstrate the ability to select and use appropriate mathematical techniques in problem solving.
Students will also be working towards achieving their mandatory NCEA Numeracy co-requisites - 10 credits.
At the conclusion of this course, students will be well prepared to continue their studies at Level 6 of the NCEA curriculum.

Contributions and Equipment/StationeryThere is a $23 course fee including GST that covers the subscription to NZ Grapher, online worksheets.
Further costs will only occur if students enter competitions. Students must have the following workbooks for classwork that can be ordered via Office max
1) Walker Maths Numeracy workbook.
2) Year 10 Nulake Mathematics Workbook
Optional –
Students can subscribe for Education Perfect - a digital learning platform and get access to range of lessons, practice tasks for Year 10 curriculum as well as for their preparation for Numeracy CAA.
All students require to carry a 1E5 Exercise Book, Scientific Calculator (e.g. Fx 82 AU Plus II), ruler, eraser and a protractor along with a pen/pencil when they arrive for the Maths class. They also need a working, charged laptop for educational tools such as Google Classroom.
