Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr Z. Irani.
Community Action is made up of the core curriculum areas of:
- Mathematics (Statistics)
- Social Studies
All topics that are socially important are statistically rich. This combination of core curriculum areas allows students to engage in using data and mathematical skills at higher levels while exploring topics and issues that matter to them and our communities.
A critical part of Community Action is enabling students to move ideas into action, creating change and making a positive impact in our community.
Topics may include:
- Population growth and the use of resources
- Food for thought - does our environment impact our choices?
- Meeting of cultures - how do we preserve language and identity?
This course will explicitly develop the college Capabilities of:
- Collaboration – working in teams to learn with and from others.
In tertiary learning and the workplace collaboration is often a critical, but challenging, skill required to solve complex problems. In Community Action we are explicitly developing students' ability to work with others who have different skills, experience and world view to solve problems and learn from one another. Elements of our work will be carried out individually as well as in collaborative groups.
- Global Leadership - understanding different viewpoints and ways of thinking to lead and empathise with others.
We do not have to look far to see how polarizing our world can be. In Community Action we are focused on developing students' abilities to explore how they and others have a place in our society and to understand what it means to be a citizen of their school, the wider community, and globally.
