Year 10 Media Studies HALF Year (10MESH)

10MESH
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr B. Uy.

Pre-requisites

You should have an interest in Media.

Media Studies is a subject that encourages students to engage critically with the world of media. This half-year course is designed to encourage students to become more critical about the media that they engage with each and every day and to give students a taste of what is to come in senior Media Studies. There are two components to the course: a genre study (genre to be determined by class vote), where students will learn about the role media genres play in both society and the media industry and an advertising unit which focuses on the issues and effects of advertising in the media. Assessments for this course will be a combination of film production and written work.

This course is suited for learners who are excited about asking questions and thinking critically and/or have an interest in careers in media production, marketing, journalism and any other job based around analysis and production.

Course Overview

Semester A
Block 1: Introduction to Genre Studies
Learning intentions:
Description:
The first block of this course will involve analysing the popular media genre of horror. We will look at how media genres are influenced by factors such as changes in society and the media working as a business. In this way, students should gain some understanding of why popular media texts (both good and bad) are the way they are (and how even bad films and programmes still manage to make money). This will be assessed through a creative planning task.

Block 2: The Evolution of Advertising
Learning intentions:
Description:
In our second block, we will learn about advertising. We will look first at the language of advertising before stepping back and looking at how advertising has developed over time, moving from medium to medium and examine some of the issues present within advertising, from how they represent certain groups of people to how advertising is affecting the media we watch. Through this unit, students will be introduced to some of the issues that plague the wider media and ideally learn to be more aware of how advertising tries to influence its audiences. This will be assessed through production and through our 1.7 internal.

Block 3: Production of an Advertisement
For our final block, students will apply what they have learned in the previous two blocks in order to produce a radio commercial that uses two conventions of the genre we studied. Students will be working in groups and will have to create a design and plan for their advertisement which they will film and then edit into their final product. Students will be assessed on both their planning and their production.
