11OPES

Year 11 Outdoor Education and Physical Education Studies (11OPES)

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr S. Muirson.

This course is made up of both theory and practical elements. It is a full time course (one year) and is aimed at students who enjoy the challenges provided by a range of Outdoor and Physical Education activities and who may wish to go on to study these areas further at Level Two.

The course compliments the Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Silver Award and is structured around a combination of NCEA Level 1 Physical Education standards. Students are provided with opportunities to demonstrate their abilities in a range of Outdoor and Physical Education activities. Please note this award is run externally by students who are motivated to independently work alongside the 11 OPES course.

It is likely that there will be a maximum of only two classes next year so genuinely interested students need to make their choices as early as possible to avoid disappointment . It involves an overnight tramp to the Pinnacles, an optional multi day tramp, rock climbing sessions at Extreme Edge, mountain biking at Totara Park and an optional introductory surfing trip to Te Arai Beach.

Pre-requisites

The course is open to students who have completed 10 OPES as well as any student who has a genuine interest in outdoor and physical education activities. Students need to be able to show dedication to this course as it will require them to complete tasks in their own time outside of school.

Students choosing this course cannot take 11PES or 11ADE because of a crossover with the Achievement Standards offered in these courses.

Owing to this course involving a number of high risk activities, acceptance into this subject is based on a review of a student's previous pastoral record.

The criteria is as follows:

1. Attendance must be above 75%. 11 OPES has students out of class for trips and this can cause serious disruption to other classes, especially for NCEA. Students should be able to manage their attendance appropriately. Careful consideration is taken into account for the nature of these absences, legitimate justifiable reasons will not result in non-acceptance.

2. Behavior in 10OPES course has been deemed unsafe.

3. Students have shown no interest in the optional subject in year 10 when taking it, participating in no trips and not paying course fees. This is case by case basis and a dialog with caregivers is started around options to ensure students are choosing the course for the right reasons.

Seriousness of incidents: Students who have 1 or 2 serious incidents, this involves fighting, alcohol, drugs and vaping, stand downs.

Volume of incidents: Students with 20 recorded pastoral incidents; reviewed on an individual basis. A contract can sometimes be put in place depending on the nature of the incidents.

Nature of incidence: Students with multiple defiance pastorals. Being able to follow instructions is a crucial part of outdoor education and defiance causes concern for their safety when in an external high risk setting.
