Year 13 English Internal (13ENGI)

Course Description

This course offers only internal achievement standards and cannot lead to subject endorsement. These classes focus on equipping students with the necessary critical response skills to achieve at Level 3 so that students are able to pursue their chosen pathways after graduation from Howick College.  The course components will be finalised in line with the students' needs and, as such, it is possible that some Level 2 standards may also be offered. The course will include the option of Level 2 reading and writing standards for students still needing UE literacy credits. This is a University Entrance course and offers  14 - 17 Level Three English credits .

Course Overview

Term 1
In term one, students will focus on developing the ability to respond critically to a visual text and to articulate that response in a clear and structured way. They will learn how to explore perspectives and contexts and be able to communicate their own learning through a seminar delivered to their peers.

Term 1 Assessments
AS 91480 (3.9) Respond critically to significant aspects of visual and/or oral text(s) through close reading, supported by evidence: 3 credits
A.S. 91476 (3.5) Create and deliver a fluent and coherent oral text which develops, sustains, and structures ideas : 3 credits

Term 2
In term two, students will focus on developing the ability to respond critically to connections between texts. They will use texts that have been discussed in class and they will self-select texts. Students will articulate their response in coherent written format.

Term 2 Assessments
AS 91478 (3.7) Respond critically to significant connections across texts, supported by evidence. 4 credits
As 91476 (3.5) Create and deliver a fluent and coherent oral text which develops, sustains and structures ideas

Term 3
Students will complete critical readings of literary texts. The standard they will be assessed on is:
AS 91479 Develop an understanding of literature using critical texts. (4 credits)

Term 4
Students will complete AS 91477 Create a fluent and coherent visual text which develops, sustains and structures ideas using verbal and visual language.

Pre-requisites

This course is for students who have some proven success at English  Internal Achievement Standards.
