Year 11 Media Studies (11MES)

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr B. Uy.

Media Studies is a subject that encourages students to engage critically with the world of media that they are surrounded by. Students will analyse the Sitcom genre and its relationship with audiences and Media Theory. They will also analyse Music Videos, then plan and create their own music video in groups, an exciting part of the internal assessment. Students also research into how the media represents a current event from 2018. This course is suited for learners who are excited about asking questions and thinking critically and/or have an interest in careers in media production, marketing, journalism and any other job based around analysis and production.

This subject is academic and requires students to write their analysis in essay format.  While there is a large practical component to the course the literacy and reading and writing credits come from the external exams where students write coherently and perceptively to form an argument and express their ideas.

Course Overview

Term 1
Close Viewing (1.2) – 3 credits
We begin the year by analysing film techniques through the close viewing of visual texts - particularly music videos. In the 1.2 internal you will be required to close view a chosen music video or sitcom scene and discuss how three elements create meaning and explain how/why selected elements combine to create certain effects in the scene. This is intended to help you prepare for making your own media texts in term 2. Submission for this assessment is Term 1 Week 6.
Production—Planning Stage (1.5) – 3 credits
Using the knowledge gained from close viewing, you will now be asked to apply those skills to plan and design an opening sequence for a made up television programme. You will need to plan out the specific elements of your made up show (such as characters and settings) and map out how it will look and sound in a way that engages the audience. You will create a storyboard and concept, treatment and pre-production plan that another person or group should be able to follow if required. This task is done individually. This assessment will lead to the production of an opening sequence in groups, and therefore your plan may be chosen by your group to film. Submission for this assessment is Week 10 Term 1.

Production—Beginning Filming Stage
In the last week of term 1 you will, in groups, start planning how to and begin filming your opening sequence. This will give you the holidays to work on it as well if you choose. Your opening sequence must follow the planning/narrative of one person’s plan (the 1.5 assessment).

Term 2
Production—Final (1.6)
At the beginning of term two, you will be working to put together all the filming you have done together. This will be editing the footage and creating your final piece for submission at the end of week five.
Coverage of issue/event (1.3) Current event to be determined
We finish term two by looking at our first external exam topic (1.3) where you will be required to engage with and critically analyse the news coverage of a current issue/event. This will be an event or issue that has been covered frequently over the last two years. We will be looking at HOW the media covered the issue, the factors behind-the-scenes that influenced this and what it means for both the media and society going forward. Through this we aim to improve our media literacy and understand the factors that affect how our news stories are put together.

Term 3
Characteristics of the Sitcom Genre (1.4)
In term three, we will move into the second topic for your end of year external exams. You will be required to demonstrate understanding of the characteristics of a media genre, where will focus on sitcoms as the chosen genre. We will get to watch a range of popular sitcoms ranging from the animated, the classic and the modern during this unit. It would be helpful to view sitcoms in your own time during this unit.
Write articles for a specific target audience (1.8) – UE Writing Credits
To finish term 3, students will be working on the writing standard, where they will have to write magazine-style articles aimed at a target audience of sitcom fans. To help students prepare for practice exams, these will take the form of “reviews” about sitcoms episodes of their choice. This internal comes with literacy credits and submission will be in week 7.
There will be opportunity during this term to revise for the practice exams and end of year external examinations.

Term 4
Term Four is reserved for revision for external exams, using results from practice exams to make sure you are prepared to do well in your exams. It will also be an opportunity to catch up on any other credits missed out over the course of the year.
