11SCI

Year 11 Science (11SCI)

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr R. Henty.

This 2024 Year 11 Science (11SCI) course will involve a combination of the new Level 1 NCEA standards. Howick College will identify up to four for each student to be taught. The student will have choices to make during the year as to which standard works best for them in the attainment of credits and pre-requisites for Year 12. Choices in 2024 in the 11SCI course must be the correct pre-requisite for senior courses of Chemistry (12CHE), Physics (12PHY) and Biology (12BIO).

12SCI is available to those not wanting specialist Year 12 science.

Students in 11SSC (the SIE programme) have a further 12SSC option as well as a specialist science.

Course Overview

Term 1
To be confirmed - a structure of choices will be available.

Term 2
To be confirmed.

Term 3
To be confirmed

Term 4
Revision and completion of work.

Pre-requisites

Grades in 10SCI or 10FTS/10PRS are an indication of which standards the student may choose in 11SCI. Those finding science difficult in Year 10 may look to choose certain skills-based internal assessment standards, whereas those finding Year 10 science straight forward should look to choose the external material assessment standards in 11SCI.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

$21 for Stile Education (paid to the school), $26 Scipad workbook (purchased through Office Max).

Pathway

You need to have sat and passed the equivalent Year 11 examination paper to get into some Year 12 sciences. For instance:
Students coming out of Year 11SCI can choose one or two or three Year 12 sciences. Some choose to take a specialist science course 12BIO 12CHE 12PHY only if they meet the entry requirements for which one(s) they have chosen.
Pass Mechanics to get access to 12PHY
Pass Genetics to get access to 12BIO
Pass Acids and Bases to get access to 12CHE

Assessment Information

A selection of these 12 papers will be chosen by the school and made available for students.
